Biodegradation

Biodegradation is a special example in which polymers are broken down by biological agents. Biodegradation by microorganisms, rodents and insects is known. When protein-containing substances decompose, putrefaction occurs. The organisms involved in biodegradation are called decomposers.

At the Žirany plant, a subsidiary of Waste transport, the biotechnological disposal and recovery of hazardous waste (contaminated with oil) is carried out on an open production area of 3018 m2 by applying a preparation to the pre-treated contaminated material (waste) and maintaining conditions favorable for the development of the microbial population:

  • pH 4.5 to 7.5
  • temperature 5 to 35°C (but can operate in the range 0-60°C)
  • humidity 40 – 60%
  • air access
  • nutrient supply

The formulation is developed for degradation of petroleum hydrocarbon pollution. Effectiveness has also been verified for PAH and BTEX pollution.
